Schaezlerpalais English

A journey through the Baroque and Rococo periods

We invite you to the Schaezlerpalais in Augsburg, where the Liebert/Schaezler patrician family once lived, celebrated, conducted their business, and enjoyed art. Here, the Bavarian king danced, a princess listened to an opera composed especially for her, and Marie Antoinette stopped on her honeymoon to Paris to inaugurate the magnificent Rococo ballroom. This museum guide takes you on an interesting and entertaining tour of the Schaezler Palace.

A journey through the Baroque and Rococo periods

Our tour takes you up the skyward staircase to the realm of the arts. On the first floor, the treasures of the German Baroque Gallery await you. Masters of Swabian Baroque and Rococo painting bring past eras back to life and transport you to distant continents. Discover the “Instagram of the 18th century” in the form of portraits of class-conscious citizens, proud patricians, and beautiful ladies. Even the great masters of their art were not immune to leaving behind a “selfie” or two and presenting themselves to posterity in self-portraits.

Along the colorful supraports above the doors, commissioned by the first owner of the house, this museum guide leads you through the rooms of the Schaezler Palace, which still exude the spirit of the 18th century. Our path takes us past familiar and surprising scenes from Greek and Roman mythology through the magnificent suite of rooms on the first floor to the Rococo Hall, the golden heart of the Schaezler Palace. A mysterious lady with a squirrel, delicate flower still lifes by female artists, and other masterpieces from the Haberstock Foundation adorn the walls of the second floor, where the family's actual living quarters were once located. The authentic Rococo garden or the cozy café are particularly good places to browse through the last pages of this museum guide, which reveal interesting and amusing facts about the family history and offer a glimpse behind the scenes of the Schaezler Palace.
